Introduction

DUE 8/27 08 (must be posted by midnight on 8/27)

1. Write a short musical biography of yourself. Include in the biography the following items: Name, your major, what kind of music you listen to, the last music you purchased, whether or not you download/purchase music online, and the last musical event you attended, such as a concert, etc. Also include information about musical training, for instance the instruments you play and/or experience you have. Finally, include any other information you think would be important or just enjoyable for me to know.

2. What does it mean to be an “artist”? Who do you think is a great artist today in the music business? What is the genre they perform and what is it about them that makes them an “artist”? Define music in your own terms. Use terminology from chapters 1-6 of “The Enjoyment of Music.”

My name is Brad Baugh. I'm a biblical studies major. I listen to a wide variety of music... contemporary Christian, choir, easy listening, light rock, indie rock, pop, power-pop, techno, hip-hop, acoustic, hardcore, and even country. Generally, I download music online, but the last album I purchased was Coldplay's "Viva La Vida." The last concert I attended was a free reggae concert from a local Bloomington band at a festival downtown. I sing a little and I am a mediocre drummer. I played the trumpet for six years in high school/junior high, but I doubt if I could still play well.

To me, an artist is someone who is able to express his/herself through a means that others can enjoy with their eyes or ears. One of my personal favorite artists is John Mayer. Although his music isn't overly complex, and his lyrics are groundbreaking or mind blowing, there is still an element of his music that completely captivates me. Music to me is an aesthetical series of notes by one or more instruments that set to a rhythm.

Brad,
This is a very well-thought-out answer. Your definition of an artist is interesting - do you think someone is, therefore, NOT an artist if a particular person does NOT enjoy their music? I agree that John Mayer has interesting music - although I admittedly do not listen to him purposely - only when I hear him, say, in a grocery store or mall or some public place. I think the character of his voice, coupled with his guitar skills is what sets him apart. I appreciated his song, "Father's Be Good To Your Daughters" (I think that is the title).

I don't listen to music
I've never purchased any music
I've been to one concert in my life and it was to see FFH 10 years ago.
I've played piano, drums, and bass at different times in my life. I have quit playing them all other then messing around on the drums every once in a while.

I feel that the term artist is very loosely used in the world today. Anyone that sells a major label is called a artist even if their music is trash. I don't know any great artists .As far music that I hear in church I do have a opinion on. I feel there is a change in the music from what I would describe as music that was written for a purpose too music that is mostly just written to sell a album. I'd rather hear a old song like amazing grace that was written for a reason than a song that is dub christian but has no real meaning.

I don't have the book yet, to answer the last question. I have it order though.

Greg-
I agree with you wholeheartedly on the point that music with purpose is sorely needed today!

PART 1:
My name is April Pruett. I am a Biblical Studies major. I listen to Black Gospel and Worship music. I illegally download my music (j/k), haven't bought a cd in I don't know how long lol. I do go to free napster.com and listen to new music for free. I don't purchase music online either (shocking). The last musical event I attended, besides Gateway, would be a Newsong concert that was awesome! I was pretty big in chorus (high school) back in the day. I play drums at church and did have piano lessons for a little while but quit. As of interesting information about me??? I collect Simpson stuff and pez dispensers. I also have pet turtles in my apartment.
PART 2:
When I think of the term artist I think of words like singing, songwriting, painters, craft, musicians, actors/actress, and plays . Yes I think there is great artist today in the music business. Well it is kind of hard for me to pin point the genre but I see it in Worship music. I see people like Michael W Smith that can take any song, add his own touch to it and blow people away. Music is a mixer of notes that come together and either people love it or hate it. I have ordered my book but it is not here yet...sorry.

My name is Natalie Donnell. My major is Christian Ed. I listen to country, christian, and jazz/classical. I last purchased a country cd. I don't purchase music online. The last event I attended was a junior high concert. I play no instruments.

Pt. 2 An artist is someone that uses their hands or mouth to sing, play, to create a piece of art-work. Michael Buble is a great artist, he sings jazz/classical music. Music is a voice/instruments that plays continuous music notes.

I haven't ordered a book, so I cannot use the terminology.

My name is Chantal Wallace and I LOVE MUSIC. It makes me happy. My major is known as undecided. I download, borrow, buy... my music. I can't really remember the last musical event I attended other than Gateway stuff.

I play a baby bit of piano, and am still taking lessons. I also completed my freshman year here as a music major. I love to sing and do that too.

I think that an artist is someone who expresses something in a creative way. I think that there are tons of great artists; Kirk Franklin is a musical genius and I LOVE Donnie McClurkin. They are both gospel genre.

I think that music is another creative form of expression. It can uplift, tear down, depress, minister... Because of this, it is a very powerful and influential art form.

1. Hello, my name is Michael Turner and I'm a Pastoral Studies Major. I mainly listen to contemporary christian music and gospel music. The last music I purchased was a gospel cd, WOW Gospel 2008 I believe. I do purchase music off of iTunes. Music conference was the last music event I attended. I took piano lessons a long, long time ago.=D I played trumpet for two years, and I have been in school choir since 5th grade, so I am comfortable with reading music, and I have a well trained ear for hearing parts and picking out tunes on the piano. I have praise sang, lead service, special, and choir in church as well. I own about 35 horses back home, live on a farm in the middle of no where, and christian music constantly plays in both my home, barn, shop, car, ect. so music is a VERY big part of my life... I probably even sing to my horses... who know!! hahahaha

2. An artist is someone who is able to freely express the creativity contained within the human mind, and effectively conveying them to the outside world. I believe that one of the most accomplished artist is Kirk Frnaklin. He is a gospel singer. He is capable of expressing his creativity and experiences to an audience, in which he is able to inspire hope, love, and thought. Music is a melodic compilation of rhythm, harmony, tone, and pitch, combined to create music that can create mood, feeling, and passion.

1. My name is Ricky Fay. I am a Pastoral Studies major. I listen mostly to contemporary worship music. Bands like Hillsong, Desperation Band, Passion Band, and Planet Shakers make up most of my album collection. I download all of my music. I think I own maybe 3 or 4 actual CDs. The last concert I attended was the Alaska/Yukon Youth Chorale outdoor concert in Seward, AK. I took piano lessons for a few years, but I no longer play or practice. I love going to symphonies and broadway shows.

2.An artist is someone who expresses one self in one of many various creative ways. It can be through music, painting, sculptures, poems, etc.. I think Charlie Hall is a great artist of today's music industry. He is in the Christian music genre. I believe he expresses how he feels in a descriptive way that can be understood by most. Music is sound that is perceived to be in harmony.

Nice to hear that you enjoy symphonies, etc. I just never know who I will run across who likes those sort of things.

I especially like your description of an artist - "...expresses how he feels in a descriptive way that can be understood by most." That's a good way to sum it up.

1.My name is Kyle Brown and I am a music major... the only one in my class. I'm not just saying this, but I really do listen to, and enjoy, all kinds of music.... For the most part... I'm not to keen on bluegrass, or screamo. I'm becoming more intrested lately in what I call "chill music." Just a few instuments, and a smooth voice, with simplistic progressions and melodies.

I don't download or purchase music online for one simple reason..... I don't have a computer.

The last musical event I attended was...... Sadly I can't remember. Church?? It's been entirely too long.

I play the keyboard, just improvisational chords and such. I tought myself a couple years before Gateway, and have been taking lessons since. I did one year classical piano when I was 8. Needless to say that was ineffective. I wish with my whole heart that I had stuck with it though. I want to learn how to play classical piano, and jazz. Really I just want to know how to play every musical instrument in every musical genre amazingly. Probably not gonna happen.

2.An artist is someone who can create something beautiful with raw, plain materials. So to me, a musical artist is someone who can create wonderful music, with simply a guitar, or a piano. Of course it's also phenominal when you can arrange a whole musical symphony with 15 different instruments and find a part for each of them, and form something exciting from that... you are definately an artist. But I just feel that if you can capture my attention, with almost nothing at all.... that is art. An example of this would be India Arie. She's an R&B singer. Although she does typical R&B, often times she'll sit down with her guitar and sing, and I'm completely captivated.

Music is the combination of rythm and and melodies to create a sound that is pleasing to the ear.

Although I don't really think that's an accurate description, because I don't think there is one. It's so unique and very spiritual. I believe there is emotion and spirit in music as well, and that is what makes it music. And that is why it affects us the way it does.

And my blog is entirely too long. So that is all.

1. My name is Melanie Johnston. I'm a music major. I can tolerate just about any kind of music except for rap. Rap makes me wish I had no ears. I tend to favor more laid back and melodic music. The last music I procured was the new Coldplay. I can't remember the last musical event I attended. I started playing alto saxophone in 4th grade, but I don't practice as much as I should. I started piano lessons when I was 14 and bass lessons about a year ago. I'm a suck for Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

2. An artist is a creator, whatever the type of art. I think Jack Johnson is a great artist. He plays mostly acoustic; I consider him an artist because of the depth of his lyrics and the skill of his playing.

My name is Hugh Holt, and as a Music Major it is obvious that I absolutely love music…

Admittedly, I have a rather strong disliking of Contemporary Christian music because I prefer more gospel, soul, jazz, and blues influences; I just am so obsessed with raw and raspy sounds. Apostolic artists like Vonnie Lopez and our very own James Simms; Gospel artists like Smokie Norful and Tamela Mann; And other- more secular- artists like Joss Stone and Corinne Bailey Rae…

The last album I bought was Anthony Evans’ new worship album, “The Bridge”- it is amazing. And though I didn’t but it online, I do find downloading very convenient so I take advantage of it (legally, of course…

I think the last musical event I attended was when- Lord, forgive me- Indiana Bible College came through Florida on their summer tour this year…

I come from a long line of music ministers, so we all pretty much do something in that area. I have been seriously singing for about five years; playing piano for three; and writing for about a year or so(I used to play the Alto and Tenor Saxophone, but I have left that pretty much abandoned)…

Oh, I also find Big Band and even World/Foreign music very enjoyable- Ofra Haza had such a captivating voice.

I mainly listen to "Black Gospel" music. The last CD that i have purchased was Gateway's No Compromise CD. I do not buy music online. The Last musical Event that I went to would be Gateway's concert, and before that was a Mercy Me concert. I have played bass for around seven years, and started playing in the High School band. I learned most of what i know from the music minster at my old church, even though he did not play bass he taught me how to listen.

2. An artist is one that does art, and to do this well you need to be able to put yourself into your art or be passionate about it. I don't really have a favorite artist, but i do enjoy the ones that stand out from the others (I.E. Bella Fleck, Victor Wooten, Andy Mckee Ect.) My Definition of music is anything with Rhythm, and some type of flow to it. I don't believe it should just be random, it should have some order to it.

Aaron,
I agree with your definition of an artist - well said.

You should talk to Bro. Brickle at UGST - he's a HUGE Victor Wooten fan!
