Click on the link above and then click on “Gloria De La Messe (From The Mass). Listen and answer the following:
i. Does this music convey a feeling, mood or particular emotion?
ii. What, if anything, makes this piece sound sacred? (Remember “sacred” means anything sung or performed in church) Describe your reaction to this music and try to explain why you reacted this way. Is it because of your background, musical training, etc?

i.I don't know why, but I get the feeling of accomplishment while listening to this. Perhaps the feeling is because I am actually doing my homework though. Who knows?

ii.I'm sure the words they are singing are sacred in some way, but I have no idea what they are saying. So, I'm not sure what makes this sacred. My reaction was that I have no idea what they are singing about. I had this reaction because the words of sacred songs today can be understood.

Ricky,
I can see why you would be confused about the sacred nature of this chant - since none of us understand Latin!

Assuming this is sacred, what would be your reaction?

i. This piece feels very solemn to me. Kind of haunting, kind of triumphant at one point.

ii. I have no idea what they are singing, but the way they are singing makes me think the lyrics have to be sacred. Their singing puts pictures of stained glass windows and massive steeples in my mind. I don't think this has anything to do with my musical training, just an overactive imagination.

i. This chant leaves me feeling light. I know that's not a mood. So I guess you could say i feel uplifted. And makes me want Christmas. I see lights and snow and hot chocolate. And for some reason popcorn. And presents.

ii. Fact that is is a slow chant in Latin makes it seem sacred to me. Because I automatically think of Monks and Nuns. Also the acoustics make it sound sacred. Because it kind of echoes. It sounds like their in a large building. Probably a hughe church. This could be because I went to catholic school my whole life until Gateway. So I've been to a lot of Catholic churches, and have heard this style sung in churches before. The End.

Melanie,
I thought your comment, "the way they are singing makes me think the lyrics have to be sacred" is a good point. I wonder, if we used your standard, if some music we call sacred would pass the test?

Just a thought....

I don't really know how this song makes me feel. Usually chants have like a sacred or forbidden feel to them. Like Indiana Jones in an secret cave or something, but this doesn't really seam as mysterious to me for some reason. I guess that kinda answers both questions. My association with this type of music and Hollywood to me represents something sacred

Brad,
I find it interesting that you associate this type of music with Hollywood - interesting in a good sort of way, that is. I wonder how people of the Renaissance would view our use of their music in movies? Interesting point you make here...

My first impression of this piece is victory. My second impression would be of the moments after a battle in all those medieval movies when they go over the battlefield slowly with the camera. But that's just the middle part when it gets all slow. It's probably not good that I relate a Catholic mass to a war zone. The end is kind of like a coronation.
Anyways, I feel this piece is sacred because it sounds like a church piece. That isn't because of my background or training.

The mood of this chant seems to be more bright and relativley uplifting compared to many chants. You can tell it's sacred because they sing Amen at the end! =D That's not the only reason though. the words were one give away, there were many Glorias and so on. The tone, in a sense, also leaves the listener uplifted to a certain extent, I know it did me that way. I was reminded of times in which I sang song similar to this in school choir, such as Ave Maria, and they were all uplifting songs whith powerful meanings engrained throughout!

I feel like the singers are confident in something. That they are telling a message that they believe everyone should here. I guess it would sound sacred because they say "amen" at the end ...j/k lol. Seriously I think it is sacred because they are singing about God. It is very up lifting.

1. This type of stuff all does the same thing for me. I dislike it, and I get the mental picture of these people singing and someone randomly taking them out.
2. The tone and the mood it expresses reminds you of a catholic church so I would say it sacred. I look up the words too so I guess I cheated.

The reason I reacted the way I do, I dunno I just don't like it.

this had a soft mood to it. it was very peaceful. It felt sacred because it seemed like something that would be played in church.

1. This music has a somewhat uplifting feeling to it, and and it also brings about a feeling of expectancy (Like something is coming or that is is part of a ceremony)

2. To me it sounds like they are singing in Latin, this in itself is enough to give it the feel of Catholic church music.

**Sis. Ahrens, I got Rhapsody working last night but then I lost internet so I couldn't send them until today!!

This music makes me feel happy and peaceful and it reminds me of "The Sound of Music" for some reason.

It sounds sacred to me because I just have the Catholics in my mind every time I hear chanting. I don't have any sweet clue what words they are singing but they must be spiritual cause I feel happy and peaceful, you know?
