1. What is your reaction upon hearing this piece?

2. A "vocalise" is actually an song that a vocalist sings to exercise their voice. Why do you think Rachmaninov decided to call this piece "Vocalise"? (He actually originally wrote it to be sung but later re-wrote it to be played by an orchestra- why would he do this?)

3. It what ways could you use this music, such as soundtracks, background music, etc....?

i. Honestly, this piece gave me an image of a man and woman standing at an airplane and crying out their goodbyes. It's very sappy.
ii. I think he named this piece Vocalise because that is what it is. It is an exercise for the orchestra as well. It's almost as if a voice is singing (the strings) and fluctuating.
iii. I already described one scene that I could see the music being used in. It's also like the music that is played when two people are running to each other in slow motion. It's a good romantic piece.

1. This piece was very moving. I don't really know how I felt after this, but my emotions were kind of high.

2. He probably called it vocalise because he actually wrote it for a voice first. The melody has a pretty big range, one that would work the voice well. It sounds like a something a person could sing it. He probably re-wrote it because he recognized how moving it was, if he could add a full orchestra to it.

3. This to me felt like it should be used in a movie, or even a play. The piece very emotional. if you set a scene and plot around it, it would be very effective in conveying the desired emotion.

2. he probably called it "vocalise" because it was originally written to be sung. he probably thought it would sound good with an orchestra.
3 it could be used in movies, it sounds like something that would be played when someone comes home after a long time.

it is kind of boring..I mean don't misunderstand me..its pretty...but its soft and could probably get me to sleep. Its one of those pieces that could remain in the back ground and not take to much attention from the setting. Well the only reason that I could think that he would of re wrote it for a orchestra was because the range doesn't seem too broad. If it was an exercise....wouldn't the range be up and down? I could definitely see this song as the background of a movie or something like that.

1. honestly it made me think of Waterworld
2.There is some stretch in range to this song... that might be why
3.This would make a good departure song... such as a goodbye
...or maybe someone lost at sea

It made me feel romantical!!

I think that it is appropriately titled because it sounds like something that a soloist would be singing. The melody is not steady but it moves up and down quite a bit which would exercise your voice. I think that it is appropriate for voice or orchestra, either would sound pretty.

I think that it should be used in movies at some romantic moment or a moment where someone is thinking about the person they love!!

i like this it is nice and peaceful and it makes me feel like i am floating on a cloud.

This would be good to excercise your voice with because it goes up and down a lot. He made it into an orchestra because it sounds good.

I see this in a movie as a moment of discovery, when the character is wondering about what just happened.

1. This piece made me feel very emotional. It actually made me feel a little sad.
2. I'm not sure about this one. Maybe it is called that because he wanted others to put their voices this song. Maybe he wanted people with all types of voices to be able to practice with this piece.
3. In a movie you could have this playing in the background during a restaurant scene. There would be a couple talking and then the guy leaves the girl.

1. It seems as if it should be played as two "lovebirds"=D walk through the park. It is very romantic and very peaceful in nature.

2. I beleive that it would be very challenging to sing such a peice, that is why it's called a vocalise, if it is intended for a singer than it would be well suited, and would hold many opportunities to display certain emotions and feelings of the song.

3. Like I said before, it is very, very peaceful, and just as I listen to it while typing this it is calming, and allows me to concentrate. It would also be very good for any romantic atmosphere.
