i. “When I Am Laid In Earth” is a sung by “Dido, Queen of Carthage” who has fallen in love with the adventurer, Aeneas, who is on a journey commanded by the gods. Aeneas is leaving and Dido has decided her fate is death since she cannot have her love, Aeneas.Listen to the low-sounding stringed instrument you hear in the background - it is playing a descending line. Describe how this descending line and the vocal part help to make up the mood of this piece.

The mood is tragic and heartbroken. The descending line adds to that because it is low and dramatic. An ascending line would be more upbeat and positive. The vocals are also very slow which enhances the sadness of the character.
honest to goodness I feel like the descending line and the vocal part is leading me to some resting place....Like the end of something. The music is sad and sounds like it is the end of something.
this was a very depressing piece of music. I think it was because of the descending notes at then beginning. The singing is sad too, but I think it would have been just as sad without singing.
1. Because of the way that this song is set up it sounds like it would be used for people walking to their death, or a type of death song. It does not seem to have any hope, and sounds like a very mellow sad song. But nevertheless it is still a very beautiful piece of music.
This piece of music is low and slow so it puts you in a sad or depressed mood. The notes get lower which make you think an end is near.
This piece is depressing in the best way possible. It's beautiful and makes me feel like I should be reflecting back over my life. The descending line gives the piece a feeling of finality, which the song obviously needs since it's about a death. The vocals are intense. I think that's what tears would sound like if they could sing.
I think that this song sounds sad!! It is very appropriate for the description given...the descending line sounds like a journey to death. Gradually losing hope; like her heart is breaking. Vocals are slow which makes it dramatic and solemn.
The minor tones and slow movement of this piece really interpret the tragedy of Dido's loss. The strings definitely add an element to the emotions as well.
The first thing that sets the mod of this piece is the mode it is in. This piece is played in a minor mode, which sets a solemn and emotional mood. Her voice sounds like a cry, by which we feel the hurt that she bears. The low sounding instruments contribute to this feel. The descending motion leads us into the depths of Dido's despair.
Melanie,
that's REALLY good! I never thought about how tears would sound if they could speak...

Brad and Kyle,
I agree - it's SOOOO slow. Almost sounds like there's something wrong with the CD! But it certainly sets the mood...

The mood of the song is very grim and hopeless, with a very depressing tone. The descending notes and the very soft, floating, and almost angelic voice all give the feeling of death and leaving this mortal body. The song is very final, and leaves the listener feeling very secluded, almost to yourself, and in a place of deep reflection.
This is a very depressing piece. The Strings in the background were definitely the setting instruments for the tone of the song. Without the strings it would definitely sound alot like a chant, but with the strings included it adds the solemn tone to it.
I feel that that the minor key and the vocals of this peace depicts the story line because it is very very depressing as is the story.
